Abstract. I will give an overview of some results concerning the essential spectrum of general self-adjoint elliptic differential operators on Riemannian manifolds. In particular, I will discuss the so-called decomposition principle, as well as a general form of what is sometimes referred to as Persson's theorem, which characterizes the bottom of the essential spectrum in this case.
